Help us rescue old books and find new homes for them.

We are The Sustainable Book Company – Our Mission is To Save Books.

We focus on ‘Books & Education’.

Over the past 6 months we have focused on building The Sustainable Book Company, pulling together new and existing businesses to fulfil our mission:

To Save Books!

Our strategy is simple through the British Book Rescue programme we rescue books, then we rehome them and if they have been overly loved recycle them responsibly.

Every year millions of books are thrown away and lost to the world.

So we are recruiting an army of people to help us rescue them and find new homes where they will be read and loved.

We collect book donations from individuals and organisations all over the South West who no longer have room for them, bringing them to our rescue centres to be sorted via the British Book Rescue programme.

We spend lots of time and effort sorting each book by hand in order to find the best home for every one of them. Some we sell to help us pay for what we do through our businesses such as Cambridge Rare Books and Books By The Yard.

  • Some are given to schools, hospitals, prisons, and libraries, to aid education and encourage a love of reading.

  • Some have been read, re-read and loved so much that they cannot go on and are recycled into something new.

Rescuing Books and Rehoming Books improves peoples lives here’s how……

One in five children in the UK cannot read well by the age of 11 and by 16 the reading skills of children from disadvantaged backgrounds are on average almost three years behind those from the most affluent homes.

Children who read books more at the age of 10 and more than once a week at the age of 16 gain higher results in maths, vocabulary and spelling tests at age 16 than those who read less regularly and are more likely to secure managerial or professional jobs in later life.

Around 5.8 million people (16% of adults) in the UK score at the lowest level of proficiency in literacy. Low levels of literacy cost the UK an estimated £81 billion a year in lost earnings and increased welfare spending, impacting on 'the success of the economy as a whole'.

Rescuing Books and Recycling Books responsibly improves our environment here’s how……

The UK uses 12.5 million tonnes of paper per year – that is a forest the size of Wales.

Families throw away 6.3 million tonnes of paper each year most going to landfill – that is equivalent to 1.5 million African elephants. A staggering 20% of all landfill is paper – and each tonne of paper uses up 3 cubic meters of landfill space.

We never incinerate or send old books to landfill. At The Sustainable Book Company we recycle overly loved books by pulping them – which is the responsible way to recycle because not only does it result in recycling into new paper, but every tonne of recycled paper saves 17 trees.

One tonne of paper from recycled pulp saves 30,000 litres of water, enough water to fill a family sized swimming pool. One tonne of paper from recycled pulp saves 4200 kWh of energy, that’s enough energy to power a family living in a 3 bedroom house for a whole year.

So to find out how you can help us to improve people’s lives on our mission To Save Books by rescuing, rehoming and responsibly recycling them
